The Harbor Cat Rescue is a volunteer-run non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned cats in Ashtabula County. The cats are treated for any apparent physical issues, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and given flea and worm medications. Some cats are very adoptable; some are adoptable, but will require an adopter with a little more patience and compassion.
Because some of these cats have already been abandoned once or more (often due to evictions), or they have already been abused, we are looking for adopters who are secure in their homes and income and who have peaceful, non-violent environments. Some of the most abused cats are very affectionate in spite of their experiences. Some are shy and take time to trust people again, but there is great satisfaction in earning their trust and love.
Our adoption fee is $100. This helps defray some of the medical costs such as the spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and care costs, but the main reason for this is we want you to value your cat. It is not a toy, nor is it disposable. To those of us who have invested so much of our time to get them well and care for them daily, our cats are worth much more than that.
Can you afford a cat? After the initial adoption fee, you should consider whether or not your budget will accommodate the daily needs and possible future veterinary care that a cat requires. Dry food, canned food & litter will cost at least $20 a week. Should the cat need to see a vet, the initial examination fee ranges from $35-$65, which does not include medications, procedures and surgeries which vary greatly.
